This magnificent Victorian house in the heart of the Lake District National Park is perfect for families or groups of friends looking for a luxurious escape amidst some beautiful scenery. Surrounded by acres of private farmland, you’ll have plenty of privacy and peace and quiet while still being able to walk to the bustling Lakeland village of Bowness-on-Windermere. The elegant interior of the house provides plenty of calm and comfort, creating a relaxing setting for your adventure to the Lake District.
The house has been thoughtfully refurbished to preserve its traditional Lakeland character while creating a luxurious holiday home for large groups. Features such as chandeliers and beautiful fireplaces are complemented by the carefully selected furnishings. There’s a well equipped kitchen with everything you’ll need and a traditional dining room with room for 12 around the large table.
When it’s time to put your feet up, you’ve got several living spaces to choose from. Get everyone together for a game of cards or a board game in the elegant drawing room with comfy sofas gathered around a log burning stove and views over the garden. If you’re looking for a quiet spot to curl up with a good book, the snug is a cosy room with another log burner. For a movie night, head down to the cellar which has been converted into a cinema room with a 75” screen and surround sound. You’ll also find a pool table and football table in this room, creating a cosy hideaway just in case the weather isn’t so inviting outside.
There are five beautifully furnished bedrooms, sleeping up to 10 guests in total and all with stunning views of Lake Windermere, the estate’s gardens or out to the Lakeland fells. They are all named after fields on the estate and are all furnished with family antiques and custom-made furniture. Two of the rooms have ensuite shower rooms and there are also two family bathrooms, one with a luxurious roll-top bath.
On sunny afternoons head outside to the large stone terrace and patio where you’ll find a BBQ and outdoor dining area. While away the day playing games on the lawns or exploring the woodland areas beside the house before lighting the fire pit and toasting marshmallows late into the evening.
Birkdale House is located on the Matson Ground Estate covering 490 hectares and with walks right from the front door that offer fantastic views of the Fells and Lake Windermere. Start exploring with the short walk to the Biskey Howe viewpoint and then up to the summit of Brant Fell nearby. You’ll get great views over the water as well as the Langdale Pikes and out to the western fells, including Scafell Pike and Great Gable. You can also access the famous Dales Way straight from Birkdale House which runs from Bowness-on-Windermere, through the North Yorkshire Dales to Ilkley.
