Learn moreWantsley farmhouse is a family home with a gorgeous, spacious interior, a lovely huge garden, cheeky chickens and wonderful fields and woodland to explore. It would be the perfect place for a large family get together with all the kids, or a group of friends wanting to make happy memories in a joyful setting.
You'll arrive to find an impressive house that sits cheerfully in its own grounds overlooking some stunning scenery. Through the gate and into the house, the first feeling is a happy family home.
The heart of this 17th century home is undoubtedly its kitchen which is very big indeed and warmed by an AGA. There's a small dining table that seats six with a clash of different chairs where you can start unpacking food and drink and poking around in cupboards.
There's a cosy living room with big squishy sofas, chunky wood furniture, a plethora of Indian rugs and a log burner. The room is inviting and warm without being cluttered and it's a great spot for movies with popcorn. There's a kids lounge next door with its own sofa, beanbag, DVD player and a cupboard crammed full of games.
The dining room is a particular delight with wallpaper imitating a full library, a table that seats 10 with a smaller table that can be added on to the end to make it comfortable for 14. There's also a grand piano and a fireplace making this an excellent room for long celebratory suppers and a singalong!
There are also two toilets downstairs, one quite fancy and the other in the utility room.
All of the bedrooms are absolutely charming. There are three double rooms with wood or iron framed bedsteads, all of which are large and cosy. They're decorated in a homely style with nice antique wooden pieces and not too much frippery. One of the doubles has an ensuite shower room and there's an additional double room in the attic which has thick beams overhead and really gives you a taste of the property's age with a twisty old staircase to get you up there. This room adjoins another with a futon perfect for a couple of kids and makes the room a great family option.
There's also a twin room for kids and a cosy single that can also accommodate an inflatable mattress on the floor should you wish to cram in just one more. All in the house sleeps 11 to 13 very cheerfully and the whole glorious endeavour is a bit reminiscent of The Darling Buds of May.
The family bathroom is probably the most modern looking part of the house with a large free-standing bath described as “ridiculously comfortable”. There's also a large walk-in shower. The kids have their own bathroom with a tub and there's a big wooden chair in the corner where one imagines Nanny used to sit.
After a peaceful night's sleep everyone can come together for breakfast in the AGA-warmed kitchen or, if it's a full house, the dining room can be the setting for a shared full English. Whilst you nurse your second coffee the kids can head out into the garden where they'll have a brilliant time searching for the elusive and very independent chickens. There's a treehouse to explore, a trampoline, swings and lots of space to run riot.
The garden is pretty great for the grown ups too with a lovely alfresco dining area and a fire pit that you can fill with bits and bobs from along the stream to get a good fire going in the evening.
The house faces south across the gardens and looks over the stream which also provides the water for the house (filtered of course!). Up over the fields there's woods to explore and the town of Beaminster is nearby where you'll find plenty of restaurants and pubs to enjoy. The Red Lion is an 18th century coach house and has a nice outdoor beer garden that's dog friendly. The Ollerod is a great wine bar and restaurant and Brassica is a small intimate and award winning local eatery.
You'll be 15 minutes form the Jurassic Coast and the nearest seaside town with beach which is West Bay. Lyme Regis and Chesil Beach are nearby also. If you fancy a walk there are dozens to choose from including Lewesden Hill and Pilsdon Pen, or you can stroll 100 yards down the road and then up to the Wessex Way with head clearing views to the sea, and then down to the village of Stoke Abbott where you can reward yourself with a pint and some food at The New Inn.
