In a magnificent elevated position, looking out over the medieval town of Motovun, Villa Sancta Maria brings a rustic glamour to Croatia’s Istrian Peninsula. In an area famed for its wines and truffles, this villa is perfect for both foodies and lovers of the great outdoors. Boasting the most spectacular views the villa is also just a 30-minute drive from the Istrian coast.
This peaceful six-bedroom villa sits in splendid isolation, surveying the green hills which seem to stretch for miles. The villa’s own garden is dominated by a particularly large swimming pool, lined with lounger chairs and parasols, and a suspended hammock on the adjacent lawn. More seating and dining areas can be found closer to the house, along with a barbecue.
Fully air-conditioned, this impressive villa features five bathrooms (four with shower, one with bath), as well as three double and twin bedrooms. It’s an old building, fully restored but without losing its original character, so you’ll find bare stone walls, antique furniture, wooden beams above your head and tiles and wood beneath your feet.
The living area features a Smart TV, DVD and a music system, and you have Wi-Fi to keep you connected. The kitchen is fully equipped with everything from coffee machine to dishwasher, but if doing it all yourself feels like too much, you can always engage the services of a private chef. There is a very pleasant covered dining area on the terrace which you are sure to make a lot of use of.
The villa also has a new commercial spa module available to hire where you can make use of a number of fantastic additional features. These include a hydromassage hot tub, a fantastic sauna, a teak lounge, a home cinema system, a PlayStation console and its own bar. This extra module can be rented for a fixed price of 1.380,00 EU per week throughout the year.
Istria is fast becoming the place to go in Croatia, and there are plenty of good reasons to visit. Extending into Slovenia and Italy, the region is beautifully bucolic, with historic towns, hillside villages and endless beaches to get to know. Novigrad is a town full of cultural sights, with several churches and the Rigo Palace among a host of baroque and gothic buildings.
Picturesque Motovun, the town which stretches out beneath you, takes part in the annual Truffle Days which take place over weekends in October and November. In fact, the largest white truffle ever found was discovered right there in the Motovun forests.
You can try the truffles, along with many other local delicacies, at one of the homely restaurants in the area – look out too for wild mushrooms, fresh asparagus and, of course Istrian wines. The stunning landscape sees many grape varieties cultivated, so you won’t be short of intriguing options.
