The Details...

There is a minimum 3 night stay at this property.

Nestled on a small private estate among the rolling verdant hills of Derbyshire, The Retreat is a high-end contemporary holiday cottage which sleeps four guests across two storeys.

Step into the open-plan double height living and dining space and you’ll know that you’ve made the right accommodation decision. Along the back wall of this multi-purpose family space, bi-folding glass doors have been utilised to ensure that the Derbyshire light pours in to fill this room, bringing the beautiful landscape inside. A high-end kitchen island is finished in understated slate tones, which match the muted pallet of this subtle, elegant home. Modern bar-stools create a relaxed, intimate feel in this spacious and airy kitchen space. No expense has been spare to equip this room, which will impress even the most serious cooks with its impressive range of amenities and appliances.

The first bedroom is also on this floor, making it a great choice for individuals or couples who struggled with stairs. The kingsize Hypnos bed can be divided into two singles, depending on the configuration you’re accommodating, and a high-end ensuite with walk-in shower completes the bedroom.

On the first floor, an open plan approach has been used to take advantage of the views and light the ample windows afford. Uninterrupted by internal walls, this space is airy and open. The bedroom is effectively the length and breadth of the cottage itself, with an en-suite bathroom, complete with walk-in shower and free-standing tub. Guests can look out over the dramatic hills and plunging valleys of Derbyshire from the bed in this architecturally extraordinary home.

The finishings and fittings of this cottage suggest understated comfort and subtle luxury. Outside, a stand-out feature is the hot-tub, the ideal way to unwind at the end of the day, and take in the stunning Derbyshire topography while you enjoy a glass of wine. Inside, the walls are adorned with the work of local artist Kevin Shepherd.

The architecturally gorgeous town of Ticknall, a historic centre with a plethora of dining options is nearby. Calke Abbey, the former seat of the Harpur-Crewes (now under National Trust stewardship) is an extraordinary stately home, and well worth a visit. Also in the Ticnkall area are the limeyards and brickyards, a well-preserved remnant of this midlands town’s former industrial glory. Ticknall’s history is closely intertwined with that of the influential Harpur-Crewe dynasty, whose munificence also funded the eighteenth century almshouses this area is known for.
