The Details...

Combine a Scottish city break with accommodation on a traditional Dutch barge with John Hume, a unique space moored in Glasgow's Speirs Wharf. The barge has been refurbished to an incredibly high standard but while still maintaining the heritage and charm of this exquisite vessel.

With its classic hull there is no mistaking the origins of John Hume. This getaway in Scotland's second city accommodates 2 people, making it the perfect romantic retreat. Guests step inside and are greeted by the beautifully designed open plan living space that defies its size. Individual comfy seats can be moved and linked together to become sofas or chairs in front of the TV and wood burning fire. There is also a dining table and chairs and porthole windows allowing light to flood in under the original wooden ceiling.

A well equipped kitchen completes the social area with its hob, microwave, coffee maker, kettle, and plenty of utensils, crockery, and cutlery. This flows towards the double bedroom with its large and comfy bed and past the bathroom with walk-in shower, basin, and WC - with all of the rooms offering a surprising amount of space.

From Speirs Wharf, John Hume offers stunning views across the Glasgow skyline and towards Campsie Fells in the distance. Located as it is on the Forth and Clyde Canal, the barge is the perfect starting point to hire a canoe or bike and go and explore either by water or road. Alternatively the city centre is just a 20 minute walk away and has much to offer.

Getting around couldn't be easier with Glasgow's 120 year old subway being the third oldest in the world. Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum is a particular favourite and is absolutely free, while history buffs will probably enjoy visiting the cathedral and the accompanying Necropolis cemetery with its fascinating sculptures. For those seeking good food and wine then Ashton Lane is the place to go with its array of bars and restaurants - including Ubiquitous Chip and its famous haggis. A true Scottish experience isn't really complete without a dram in a traditional pub and a ceilidh, either.
