A quaint little retreat, The Hermitage is not. This luxury 10-bedroom country house sits atop the Isle of Wight's St Catherine's Down, providing countryside living on another level. With its sprawling grounds, elevated terrace, games room, stunning island kitchen, and even its own gym, there is something for everybody here. So, whether you're after a family retreat or are a group of friends looking for a base from which to explore the Isle of Wight, look no further than The Hermitage.
Upon crossing the threshold, The Hermitage makes the ultimate first impression, as you come upon the striking entrance hall, complete with a sofa, armchair, fireplace, and a feature staircase. The drawing room - another elegant space - features panelled walls, a marble fireplace, four leather couches, and two sets of French doors leading out to the garden and patio area.
A gorgeous country kitchen boasts an island breakfast bar, lots of workspace, and all the appliances needed for cooking up a storm, including two ovens. There is also a large dining table and chairs where you can enjoy breakfasts or sit plotting the next day's activities. A games room features a ping pong table, pool table, a 60” 3D flat screen Smart TV, and a selection of games meaning you'll forever be entertained. There's also a gym with weights, a treadmill, exercise bike, a flat screen TV, as well as an ensuite toilet and shower room for added convenience. A utility room houses a washing machine, tumble dryer, fridge, freezer, and dishwasher.
As you ascend the period staircase, you will come to the reading area, a quiet section of the house with views overlooking the splendid garden. There is a stocked bookcase, a Chesterfield sofa, and a comfy armchair - the perfect place to get lost in a book with a nice cup of tea. And when it comes to bed time, there are 10 bedrooms in total. The southern landing leads to the four master bedrooms - each with their own ensuite for added privacy - while the northern landing has another six ensuite bedrooms. Each room offers a super comfy bed meaning guests are able to enjoy a good night's sleep throughout their stay.
Outside, the property is surrounded by expansive grounds. There is a large, paved terrace to the front, with plenty of outdoor seating that is ideal for al fresco dining whilst offering lovely views over the gardens. There is also lots of green space to explore and play games on, and you will find a summerhouse and a children's playhouse tower with swings, a slide, and a climbing wall.
The Hermitage sits within the Isle of Wight Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, a region which includes about half the island along with the Hamstead and Tennyson Heritage Coast areas. The AONB is a favourite of nature lovers, with its coastal scenery, many walks, and cycle routes. The house itself is perched on St. Catherine's Down, an elevated area which offers stunning and far-reaching views. Near the top you will find St. Catherine's Oratory, a medieval lighthouse which is the second oldest in the UK. For a taste of urban life, the towns of Ventnor and Newport, the island's capital, are both within driving distance.
