This characterful cabin, steeped in WW2 history, really is a one-of-a-kind place to stay. If its walls could talk, they’d tell adventure stories of spies and secret agents. From its past as a base for Winston Churchill’s secret army, it has been transformed into a cosy, quirky retreat, still retaining memories of its colourful past.
Originally built as one of a group of woodsman’s cottages, the cabin was requisitioned during WW2 and used as a training centre for people working with the resistance in occupied Europe. Today, from its enviable spot nestled between the magical New Forest and a secret, secluded beach, it provides a welcome getaway from the hustle of bustle of modern life.
Seamlessly blending simple style with colourful vintage décor, the welcoming property sleeps up to six guests in three bedrooms. The light-filled living area, with its exposed beams and rustic brick work, forms the heart of the home. Here you’ll find comfortable sofas and a fireplace in the lounge area and colourful cabinets and a wooden table at the kitchen end. There are also all the amenities you’d expect from a self-catering property, including a stove, oven, microwave, coffee maker and fridge. A steep staircase at the end of the lounge leads to a delightful mezzanine level with lovely views from the top of the house.
From the living area, glass doors open out onto a patio with a large, peaceful garden beyond. Here you’ll find outdoor seating and a big wooden table, ideal for an alfresco meal on a warm day. And younger guests will be delighted when they spot the swing and Wendy house.
Back indoors, there are three colourful bedrooms – one with a king size bed and two with two single beds – a shower room with WC, and a bathroom with a corner bath, the ideal spot for a relaxing, luxury soak after a long day exploring the local scenery.
Accessible through a farm, The Coding Hut is off the beaten track but still within easy reach of the port town of Lymington and the small village of Beaulieu. From the house, it’s a short stroll to Park Shore Beach, a secluded silt, stone and sand beach with wild ponies and picturesque views across the water to the Isle of Wight.
