Tucked away in the grounds of Rick Stein’s traditional Cornish pub in St Merryn, these five beautiful shepherd’s huts offer simple luxury for seaside escapes. The huts have been designed by various members of the Stein family who have collaborated with local experts in craft and design. Jill Stein has taken the lead with soft furnishings and amenities, choosing pieces inspired by the Cornish coast. Kate and Ed Stein have also lent their skills to creating unique shepherd’s huts that celebrate local craftsmanship, traditional design and modern comforts.
Each of the shepherd’s huts is a relaxing sanctuary with Scandinavian-style decor and flooded with natural light thanks to big windows on all sides. They each comfortably accommodate two adults and feature luxurious double beds positioned to overlook the Cornish countryside. There’s a kitchenette equipped with all of the basics to get you started in the morning, including a Nespresso machine. This is opposite a breakfast bar underneath a window where you can enjoy your morning coffee while planning the day ahead. This space has been thoughtfully designed with boutique fixtures and you’ll find luxurious Porthdune by Jill Stein toiletries in the ensuite shower room.
Outside, you’ll find a private decking area formed by locally sourced stone with some outdoor furniture where you can sit back and enjoy the view. In the mornings, head over to The Cornish Arms for a delicious breakfast. The menu is packed with favourites, from bacon rolls, to smoked salmon and scrambled egg to granola, yoghurt and honey.
St Merryn is a pretty Cornish village just a few miles south of Padstow and five minutes from the sea. Head out to the coast and you’ll find big sandy beaches like Constantine Bay and Harlyn. Both of these can be great spots for surfing and there are several surf schools in the area whether you’re just giving it a go or you want to brush up on your skills.
Treyarnon Bay is a little further down the coast and if you get there when the tides are right, there’s a fantastic rock pool which becomes a natural swimming pool. Keen golfers might want to test their skills at Trevose Golf Club, a challenging links course with spectacular views out to sea. For some delicious food and a spot of shopping, it’s just a short drive to Padstow where you’ll find some fantastic restaurants overlooking the pretty harbour.
