On the magical Isle of Skye, by the edge of spectacular Loch Bay, this wonderful boathouse is the perfect retreat for those looking for peace and tranquility amongst breathtaking scenery. The Boathouse was renovated in the 1960s by folk singer Donovan, and it is easy to see what inspired him to make a home in this lovely spot.
As guests approach, they will be inspired by the lawned garden on the edge of the loch which makes the perfect spot for drinks at sunset. There is even a waterfall which flows directly down the foreshore, just beyond the harbour. The Scottish weather is notoriously changeable and the cosy interior is perfect for hunkering down when the weather gets wild.
A good-sized kitchen and dining area is full of character with tartan carpets and timber beams running across the ceiling. Cooks will discover everything they need to create lovely meals and a heavy wooden dining table waits ready to be piled with plates and bowls brimming with goodies.
After dinner, retire to the lovely double height living room, with an old stone fireplace and chimney, together with a dramatic chandelier which dims to perfection. Large comfy sofas invite guests to sink in with a dram and watch the squalls as they move across the loch.
A timber, feature staircase takes guests to the gallery where they discover a second sitting area and bedroom with a double and single four poster bed. It's a lovely area to sneak some quiet alone time, or set up a jigsaw. Snuggle on the sofas with a good book while the views from the windows make you feel like you’re living on an island. There are two further bedrooms, both with solid wood bedsteads and period furniture, lovely views of the water and warm duvets and soft pillows.
The Boathouse is a short walk (10 mins max) from the Stein Inn, Lochbay Restaurant (Michelin star) and a gallery which sells art and cards. Dunvegan is a 15 minute drive and offers some interesting food shops, such as the Oldest bakery on Skye (just say Brown or White), several great restaurants, and a petrol station. Portree is just a 30 minute drive away with more amenities.
