  The Detail...

Built in 1460 and lovingly restored in 1998, Forter Castle is offers a marvellous opportunity to stay in a genuine Highlands castle in the heart of Scotlands historic and stunning northern hills. Offering accommodation for as many as sixteen guests, Forter Castle is available to rent on a self-catered basis for families, circles of friends, and other larger parties looking for a truly unique accommodation experience in the rugged beauty and history of Scotlands heartland.

Situated in Perthshire, Forter Castle can be reached in ninety minutes by car from Edinburgh, making it a convenient choice for holidaymakers coming from afar, using Edinburgh Waverley station and international airport.

Internally, the holiday home offers exactly what you might expect from a 15th Century castle. High ceilings are crossed by timber beams, windows set in thick stone walls offer dazzling views of the Scottish hills, with the occasional deer or bird of prey to be spotted, and crossed swords, stags heads, and traditional tartans adorn the walls.

Picture fires blazing in hearths, comfortable soft furniture, and a number of options for your evening dram of single malt. The renovations carried out by a father and daughter team at the end of the Twentieth Century were undertaken judiciously and with care, emphasising and preserving the castes medieval charm and aesthetics, while subtly bringing twenty first century luxuries to the castle.

The bedrooms are replete with antique four-posted beds, the walls are whitewashed plaster, and sweeping stone staircases convey you up this tall and imposing edifice. The kitchen is completely up-to-date, offering guests the opportunity to cook up a feast every night, taking advantage of the excellent local seafood, game and seasonal vegetables.

As well as offering wonder and dramatic topography, this region of Perthshire is a treat for historical, culinary and sporting enthusiasts. Abounding in country pubs with fine local ales and excellent single malts, Perthshire is world renowned for a number of country living activities. Being located within the celebrated Cairngorms National Park, Forter Castle is the perfect place to dabble in a range of outdoor pursuits, whether youre a seasoned expert or cautious first timer. Seasonal fishing is an unforgettable experience, as are archery with crossbows or long bows, skiing, shooting, golf, mountain biking and wild-swimming.

More sedate activities such as walking, bird-watching and whiskey-tasting can also be arranged, either guided or unaccompanied. That said, for many guests, the beauty of the castle and the rich history in the very stone walls makes Forter Castle hard to leave; snuggling up in the great hall or Lairds Room with a drink and a book is also a popular way to spend the afternoon.
