Modern design, natural materials and a magical seaside garden make for a wonderful stay on one of Kent's most atmospheric beaches.
Dungeness Beach Retreat is listed in affiliation with Airbnb.
Situated just yards from the sea, on an atmospheric beach and surrounded by shingle gardens punctuated with poppies, sea kale and pines, Sunspot is an out-of-this world cottage where guests can unwind in nature. This two bedroom modern chalet-style house has been beautifully designed using an abundance of exposed wood which is effectively complimented by the Scandinavian-style fittings and fixtures.
A spacious living and dining area has a double height ceiling which fills with natural light that pours through the glass doors and many windows offering fabulous views beyond the pretty garden to the sea beyond. There is a large dining table with a bench and dining chairs where guests can enjoy lengthy meals and local produce, especially the catch-of-the-day. A wood-burning stove, with a pre-filled basket packed with logs, and a large comfy sofa invite you to snuggle down after dinner with a glass of wine, to play board games, read or just reflect on the day.
In the summer months, guests can take advantage of the outdoor dining furniture, and enjoy some al fresco dining whilst making the most of every last drop of sunlight. Come bed time and there are two double bedrooms and a futon-style bed, situated on a mezzanine, to chose from. Port hole windows let in the morning light and all are impeccably styled. A family bathroom, with a bathtub and rainfall shower, serves all the bedrooms and exudes tasteful simplicity.
The property is peaceful and pretty enough for guests to be forgiven for never leaving the comfort of Sunspot, however, just a 15 minute stroll down the beach takes you to a fish shack selling amazing fish sarnies, amongst other delights. For more meals away from the kitchen, wander over to the well-known pub, The Pilot, for its famous fish and chips.
Youngsters will enjoy a trip on the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway which sends steam trains tooting and puffing past the property several times a day delivering visitors to the Dungeness Lighthouse. And a trip to the late-filmmaker Derek Jarman's home nearby is a must. It's just a ten minute stroll from Sunspot.
