The detail

Unravel the secrets of Yorkshire’s mysterious coastal past with a stay at this gorgeous seaside cottage in the North York Moors National Park. Just a short walk from the seafront in the pretty village of Staithes, Cowbar View Cottage is ideal for nostalgic, seaside days. Get lost in the narrow, winding streets haunted by old fisherman’s tales, peering down crooked, cobbled alleys and over colourful fishing sails. Walk along the rocky clifftops or build sandcastles on the beach, admiring the picture-perfect harbour and the rugged, open sea.

Cowbar View Cottage dates back to the 18th century and is a charming three-storey home nestled on the edge of Staithes Beck. Packed with ageing antiques, jumbled artwork and quirky, modern designs, the cottage offers a fresh take on traditional country style. Expect sophisticated natural shades framing beautiful sash windows, looking down on patterned rugs atop heated wooden floorboards.

The well-equipped, country kitchen is a blend of old and new and is perfect for rustling up some of the delicious, local seafood. Make use of the sleek, kitchen mod-cons or go old-school on the stove, serving family meals in your home away from home. The cosy living and dining area is open-plan to the kitchen and is complete with a group dining table and an array of comfy chairs and sofas. A vintage wood-burning stove steals centre stage and is huddled in an open hearth for cosy, winter stays.

Four beautifully-styled bedrooms can be found scattered around the house and include two elegant doubles and two single rooms. The massive master double is an impressive affair, boasting open rafters, a roll-top bath and a period four poster bed. The other three rooms each have their own timeless charm and are finished with a classic simplicity and indulgent, designer linens. A Scandi-inspired bathroom is shared amongst the rooms and has fluffy, bath towels and a steaming hot shower.

Embrace the local area by exploring its eye-catching towns and villages, visiting nearby Whitby or the famous sights of Scarborough. Go rock pooling on the beaches or paddling in the sea, eating ice creams on the seafront or drinking a cup of strong Yorkshire tea. Uncover Staithes independent stores and artisan delights, or head inland to discover Yorkshire’s flourishing country sights.
