Casa Fortunato is a luxury hotel like no other. With sweeping views of the golden streets of Lisbon, and individually designed rooms each as vibrant as the last this is a wonderful spot for your next romantic retreat. Add to this the natural light that abounds throughout the property, the deep tones of bold paint that covers and compliments the walls, and the huge, squishy beds made up with Italian sheets looking out over your very own sitting/work area, and what more could you want for your break in this incredible city? You even have access to the ultra stylish living/dining rooms that host daily breakfasts and yoga classes.
The hotel possesses its own personality and is a clear reflection of the owners’ (Filipa and Antonio) family history and tastes. Both the communal areas and the bedrooms are a perfect balance of contemporary and traditional - where the decor shouts but is not overbearing. Each individual element carries weight or is opulently textured and pleasing on the eye. The experience is a personal one; the handwoven carpets brought in the markets of Morocco, the brass clips and frosted bistro lighting that hangs over the doorways of every room, the original furniture, some of which originates from the homes of Filipa and Antonio’s grandparents.
Casa Fortunato is located upon a gentle hill in Lisbon’s central neighbourhood district of Amoreiras and looks out onto a peaceful, tree-lined boulevard. Amoreiras is one of Lisbon’s newest neighbourhoods, however ‘new’ is to be used relatively, we are talking about the oldest city in the Western Hemisphere here!
Over the last century, the neighbourhood became a vibrant mix of eclectic architecture (palatial homes lining broad avenues and quirky art-deco residences) that has given birth to a lively community. Within this community you can find a jumble of fantastic shops, incredible restaurants, cosy cafes, serene gardens, unexpected museums and from its shaded streets you can watch the ebb and flow of laid-back Lisbon life.
You will be to the north of the city and you have the perfect vantage point to start the day in Lisbon. A short walk away is Parque Eduardo VII: this huge park (running to over 26 hectares) is just a short walk from Casa Fortunato and is the perfect place to lie in the dappled shade and marvel at the view the park offers over the red roofs of Lisbon and down to the sparkling ocean below.
Around 15 minutes away is Príncipe Real: possibly the coolest neighbourhood in Lisbon – jam packed full of restaurants, bars, shops, galleries, antique shops and historic buildings it is an open-minded, bohemian corner of the city. Spend the day moseying along the cobbled streets or sit under the shade of the mighty cedar tree in the Jardim do Príncipe Real and watch the world go by.
If culture is your bag then The Calouste Gulbenkian Museum has to be on your to do list. The simple, modern building which houses astonishing treasures collected by the Armenian oil magnate Calouste Gulbenkian - sits in lovely, languid gardens with tree-lined walkways and waddling ducks that wander around its outside auditoriums. The options are endless and if in doubt, speak to the wonderful locals, Lisboans are cool personified.
