  The Detail...

Step back in time with a stay at this old-school summer camp where outdoors adventure is no longer a thing of the past. With a Low Brow Manifesto and a real no-frills appeal, Camp Wandawega is for those with real steel. So forgot about your mobile phones, WiFi and laptops and immerse yourself into this simpler way of life.

Dating back to 1925, the Wandawega site has been everything from a speakeasy and a brothel to a wholesome Latvian Church camp. Now happily maintained as an authentic summer retreat it offers a real back-to-basics camping experience by the idyllic Lake Wandawega in Wisconsin, US. Vintage wood cabins, old-fashioned trinkets and simple furnishings are celebrated here, with communal outdoor showers and well-water toilets being a real Wandawega treat.

The smallest rental option is known as the Chipmunk package and includes the joint booking of the side-by-side Green and White Cabins. One double and one bunk room can be found in the former, while the latter is great for a second couple. Nestled into the rural lakeside vista, they are intimately cosy and ideal for reconnecting with close family and friends.

A private three-bedroom cabin, known as the Raccoon accommodation, is again a real vintage treat and sleeps up to six in three double bedrooms. With a porch, sitting room, a half bath and a compact kitchenette it is a real step up in size and has idyllic country and lakeside views.

For larger groups of up to 24, the old bunkhouse is the one for you, as here there are two separate floors each with six double/twin bedrooms. For groups of twelve or less the top floor can be rented separately as the lovingly named Deer accommodation, while those looking for the whole shebang should head straight for the complete Bear package.

Once youve acclimatised to your new natural setting there are plenty of wholesome activities to try out. Canoeing, archery, fishing, hiking and biking can all be arranged, along with the mandatory hammock swinging, beach-time daydreaming and campfire tales. Head out to explore the site and youll find an array of little treats including teepees, scout tents, the original lodge and a real life treehouse. There are also tons of restaurants to visit nearby, while smokers and grills are available on site.
