Set on a working farm on the edge of the Scottish Borders, just 30 minutes from Edinburgh, Berry Hill cottage is ideal for a rural family escape. This was once the farm gamekeeper’s cottage and has been recently renovated to create a contemporary country holiday home. You’ll be surrounded by beautiful rolling landscape and big open skies, with several thousand sheep as your neighbours. With miles of walking trails right from the front door and easy access to Edinburgh, this spot has something for everyone.
This pretty cottage immediately feels warm and welcoming thanks to the contemporary interior design using natural materials with pops of green, blue and soft pink. There’s a generous open-plan kitchen, dining and living area, the perfect spot to grab a cuppa while you recover from a long walk through the fields. There’s a conveniently located cloakroom area by the kitchen where you can store your outdoor gear and leave your boots to dry. And when you’re ready to put your feet up, move through to the separate living room with its inviting squishy sofa and armchair.
Head upstairs to find the bedrooms and family bathroom. Both bedrooms, one double and one twin, are cosy and relaxing places to be, with crisp white linen and fluffy towels waiting for you. An extra camp bed can be provided on request as well as a travel cot. The bathroom features a shower over the bath and beautiful green tiles. There’s also an additional shower downstairs.
Step outside and you’ll find a seating area with an outdoor sofa and a table, perfect for taking your meals outside on a sunny day or just relaxing with a book. There’s also a tennis court which guests are invited to use and there are cycling and walking routes on the farm which you can explore. While wandering along the farm tracks, you might be lucky enough to spot some of the local inhabitants, such as hare, deer, badgers, foxes and all sorts of wild birds.
Hillhouse Farm is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts or just those who are looking to reconnect with nature. A whole array of country pursuits can be organised for you, from clay pigeon shooting to tomahawk throwing. There’s an Iron Age fort to explore and many acres of hills and streams to discover.
