Located in the heart of the charming medieval town of Axbridge in Somerset, this beautiful Grade II listed building was once an historic coaching inn. From the outside, there’s a traditional Georgian facade, however, step inside and you’ll find an interior with a personality that’s completely its own. The pair behind No.36 are a print maker and a furniture maker, so it’s little surprise to find yourself surrounded by beautiful furnishings and wonderful patterns wherever you look. Many of the textiles and wallpaper designs have been created in the printmaking studio on the property. Next door you’ll find The Roxy, a tiny 32-seat cinema which guests have exclusive access to.
Step inside to what was once the bar of the pub and you’ll find an open-plan space, perfect for entertaining. The kitchen has been well-equipped for cooking for a big group with two ovens and a gas range hob. There’s plenty of room for everyone around the dining table which also transforms into a pool table. In the evenings, the living area has big comfy sofas to snuggle up on, a wood-burning stove and a large TV. If you’d rather spend your evening getting stuck into a good book, hunker down in the library where you’ll find shelf upon shelf of fascinating reads. Whether you’re looking for one of the classics or more of a beach read, you’ll find the book for you in here.
There are four beautifully furnished double bedrooms, each with its own character and all with luxurious mattresses and bedding. Your hosts firmly believe that ‘more is more’ and you’ll find a charming mix of artwork, hand-printed wallpaper, vintage furniture and contemporary joinery to delight the senses. The bedrooms share two bathrooms, designed with the same attention to detail as the bedrooms. The extra-wide bathtub in the middle-floor bathroom is surrounded by deco-inspired metro tiles, complementing the golden scale effect of the tiles in the shower. The upstairs bathroom also has beautiful views out of the window to the Mendips.
Outside, you’ll find a Mediterranean-style courtyard, the perfect spot to sip your coffee in the morning when the sun hits the space. On warm summer evenings, gather round the outdoor dining table for some cocktails while dinner cooks on the BBQ.
Spend your days exploring the charming market town of Axbridge with its Medieval streets and friendly pubs. The town is located on the southern edge of the Mendip Hilla Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, so pack your walking boots and head out on the trails. The famous Cheddar Gorge is just down the road where you can try rock climbing or explore the extraordinary caves.

Leave a reviewI thoroughly enjoyed my stay at No.36 - the house has everything you could ever need plus a fully operational mini-cinema! The attention to detail throughout the property is exquisite - there is beautiful furniture, artwork, objects everywhere you look. The kitchen was well equipped with everything you could need. The bathrooms are amazing - finished to a very high spec with a vintage touch. Each bedroom has its own individual style and they were all large and well appointed. There’s a huge table to sit around inside and then outside there is there is the beautiful courtyard which is quite special in the evenings. To use the cinema you simply need to bring the DVD of your favourite film and you have your very own private viewing - it’s an unusual and highly recommended experience! Gemma and Bash were wonderful hosts who clearly place the comfort of their guests above everything else - I cannot wait to return!

Beautiful, relaxing and utterly unique. Had the most wonderful stay in this art filled and lovingly restored home. We enjoyed candlelit dinners in the courtyard, cosy evenings in the open plan living room / kitchen and waking up in the extremely comfy beds to stunning views. Axbridge is an amazing town and we couldn't recommend 36 and the Roxy more highly! We'll be back!

Enjoyed a perfect stay at this wonderful place in summer. Beautifully decorated to a high standard with lots of attention to detail- quirky pieces and unique interior design really add to the sense of laid back cool at the 36 & Roxy. Went as a group of female friends and we enjoyed dinners in the courtyard and garden, games in the comfy living room, and it even has its own library and cinema! This would be the perfect place for a grown up hen do, family get together or as a quirky and unique bolt hole to explore Axbridge and the Mendips.
