Twentieth Century B&B is an explosion of Art Deco style, from the architecture to the beautifully furnished interior. You’ll find this charismatic four-bedroom B&B on the north coast of Kent in Birchington-on-Sea, just minutes from the beach. The bedrooms, which are all doubles, are themed around people who have a connection with the house or local area.
Music fans may find themselves inspired by the 1970s/80s David Bowie themed room. Furnished with a space-age plastic modular double bed from the 1970s and artwork from Bowie’s early career, this room will transport you to the Ziggy Stardust era when he performed in nearby Margate.
If you have an adventurous spirit, the room themed around aviation pioneer, Amy Johnson might be the one for you. She piloted several record-breaking flights during the 1930s before her mysterious disappearance while carrying out duties for the Air Transport Auxiliary during WWII. Last seen bailing out of her plane near Herne Bay, just along the coast from the B&B, she was never found. The room is furnished to celebrate her many achievements. A map of the world covers the wall behind the luxurious king-sized bed and the room is decorated in a 1930s/40s style. The room also features an ensuite bathroom and a small balcony.
Tudor Gates, playwright, screenwriter and author, once owned the building. An ensuite room, featuring original mid-century furnishings has been themed around his impressive career. You’ll find a king-sized platform bed and a spacious balcony where you can enjoy your coffee in the morning or a glass of something in the evening.
The final bedroom is named after the Baron and Lady Carson, who once owned the land that Twentieth Century B&B is built on. This spacious room with a luxurious king-sized bed also features an ensuite bathroom and a separate lounge area from which you can step out onto the large private sun terrace, complete with outdoor furniture.
Twentieth Century B&B is ideally located for exploring some of the most interesting parts of Kent. In Birchington-on-Sea itself you have the beautiful sandy beach of Minnis Bay, just three minutes from the front door. Quex Park offers 250 acres of gardens and parklands to explore, or you could wander along the coastal path and soak up the scenery. Venture further afield and you’ll find fascinating museums and galleries in Manston, Margate, Canterbury and Broadstairs, all wonderful destinations for a day trip. There are many delights to be uncovered in this part of Kent, from Canterbury Cathedral, one of the oldest structures in the country, to the mysterious Shell Grotto in Margate.
