Hotel Egilsen is listed in affiliation with Booking.com.
The intimate Hótel Egilsen stands on the harbour of the Icelandic fishing town of Stykkishólmur, and brings a little cosy luxury to this part of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. Around 100 miles north of Reykjavik on the country’s western side, it’s a charming location to experience the warm hospitality of this much-loved boutique hotel.
Housed in a renovated 19th-century building looking out over the water, this 10-room hotel is situated in a well-preserved and highly environmentally conscious town, which visitors continue to fall in love with. Stykkishólmur inspires with its rich heritage, and Hótel Egilsen does the same – you are sure to learn much about the history of the region from owner, Gréta, her friendly team and the proud inhabitants you meet around town.
The hotel balances history with modern design, and you will find a comfy Coco-Mat bed in your room – a company which shares the ecological ethos of the hotel – made from renewable natural materials. You won’t just be doing the right thing by the planet, you will definitely be getting a good night’s sleep.
The rooms aren’t big but they are certainly cute. There’s a private bathroom with overhead shower, bathrobes and a hairdryer, plus you will have use of an iPad and free Wi-Fi. The hotel also incorporates a social guests’ lounge with a small library, a lovely place to swap stories with your fellow travellers. Gréta’s healthy homemade breakfast is not to be missed, made with organic eggs from local farms.
For a town with not many more than 1000 inhabitants, Stykkishólmur has a surprising amount going on when it comes to restaurants and places of interest. You can enjoy coffee or lunch at the Nesbrauð bakery, sample the award-winning fine dining of Narfeyrarstofa or go for evening drinks on the waterside at Sjávarpakkhúsið. Shop for crafts from local artists at several galleries, or take a dip in the hugely relaxing geothermal swimming pool.
As well as boat tours around this stunning landscape, where you might spot a puffin or two if you time it right, be sure to visit the local museums. Norska húsið, the Volcano Museum, and the light-filled viewing gallery of the Library of Water, are certainly worth the trip, as are the ocean views from landmark lighthouse, Súgandisey. You can also take a bus trip to Reykjavik, changing at Borgarnes, if you want to check out the considerable delights of the Icelandic capital.
Many places claim to be enchanting; some truly are. Let Hótel Egilsen and Stykkishólmur open your eyes to the incredible beauty of Iceland.
