Orkney Retreats is a collection of three beautiful holiday homes on the stunning Orkney archipelago off the northeastern coast of Scotland. These three properties all sit a stone’s throw from a mile-long sandy beach on the Isle of Sanday, offering panoramic sea views and a calming location in which to relax and unwind.
The first of the properties is Backaskaill Farmhouse. This five-star luxury home is semi-detached and sits next to another of the properties, Backaskaill Cottage. The farmhouse sleeps six guests across three bedrooms and has been decorated and equipped to a supremely high standard, with a handsome Scottish heritage feel to the decor.
Light the wood-burning fireplace in the lounge and get cosy with a cuppa or a glass of wine, whilst enjoying panoramic views across the bay. The Farmhouse also has a charming kitchen/dining room that offers top-end amenities that make meal prep a breeze. And you and your loved ones can enjoy sociable dinners on the rustic, hardwood dining table.
The three bedrooms all guarantee a wonderful night’s sleep and are all accessed via the stunning staircase that takes you up to the first floor. The Farmhouse also has an enclosed garden where you can dine alfresco in the summer sunshine or relax in the summer house.
Next up is Backaskaill Cottage, which sits next door. This cosy, one-bedroom cottage offers yet more amazing coastal views and great access to a beach that feels as if it’s yours and yours alone. The cottage, like the Farmhouse, also enjoys views across beautiful rolling farmland.
The cottage has a private, lawned back garden and a walled front garden where there’s a sheltered bistro-style outdoor dining area for warm summer lunches or morning coffees in the fresh Orkney air. Stepping inside, the cottage sleeps two guests, making for a lovely romantic retreat. There’s also space for one additional guest on an extra bed if needed. The cosy lounge is a great place to unwind together, however, you may wish to soak up some rays in the comfy conservatory. The kitchen/dining room is also nicely equipped and features a range cooker. The cottage’s comfy double bedroom offers a restful night’s kip, and the property also features a modern shower room.
Finally, the third property is Kilnbarn Cottage. This charming cottage sits away from the other two and is located between sweeping sandy bays right on the edge of the sea.
The cottage has picture windows that offer lovely ocean views from every room and it is beautifully presented throughout in fabulous Scandi chic, with bags of snug hygge style, warm blankets, throws and cosy textiles. Not only this, but for an added slice of luxury, Kilnbarn Cottage also features an outdoor bath where you can relax at one with nature and the elements.
The cottage’s cosy lounge has a wood-burning fireplace, a luxurious L-shaped sofa and a window seat where you can take in the view. There’s also a record player, should you wish to listen to some vinyl whilst drinking your morning cuppa.
Kilnburn Cottage has a quaint, nicely-equipped kitchen and a cosy adjacent dining room. It also sleeps four guests in a fantastic master bedroom with a big double bed and a twin room.
All three properties sit on the rugged, inspiring coast of the Isle of Sanday in the Orkney Isles. Guests can strike out for coastal walks, across peaceful beaches or head inland and wander through rolling hills. The isle boasts outstanding wildlife on land and at sea, so guests can spot rare birds and flora, including otters, orca and other marine species in the crystal-clear northern waters.
The island is also home to a heritage centre, artisanal hub, artists' studios, archaeological sites, shops, a café/pizzeria, a nine-hole golf course and a range of excellent walking and cycling paths are also available. The 600 residents of Sanday actively arrange and invite visitors to various events throughout the year, which include fishing excursions, an agricultural show, lectures, ceilidh dances, lighthouse and wildlife tours and many more engaging activities for you to enjoy.
