The detail

Formerly a monastery, now a cluster of 7 beautifully appointed apartments, L’Antico Convento lies just 8 miles from Umbertide in Italy’s enchanting Umbria region. This ever-popular area has much to offer when it comes to food, art, culture and history, with the L’Antico Convento villa providing the ideal base from which to experience it.

This impressively restored medieval building enjoys a location within easy reach of Perugia and Tuscany, to the north east of Lake Trasimeno. Both Rome and Florence are within a 2 –2.5 hour drive, and Bologna just a little further.

You can hire the villa in its entirety, or one or more of the 7 separate apartments. The apartments come in all shapes and sizes, but all with the same high standards. Choose your favourites from these:

Spacious ‘Il Re’ is a 1st-floor apartment with views across the Umbrian Hills. A great family choice, there are 2 double bedrooms with en suite bathrooms, plus sofa beds for 2 or 3 children. This bright apartment is accessed via external stairs and offers outdoor dining and barbecues on the piazza. Elegant and slightly more compact, ‘La Regina’ offers many of the same advantages, with space for 2 adults and 2 children.

Cosy ground-floor studio ‘Il Paggio’ is perfect for a couple. It boasts beautiful views of the hills and has a combined living/ sleeping area inside, and an al fresco dining area outside.

Luxury duplex ’10 Denari’ is enchantingly rustic and has room for 2 adults and 2 or 3 children. The master bedroom with en suite bathtub and shower benefits from a private sunset terrace. ‘9 Denari’ is equally appealing, and sleeps 3 adults – there’s a French style bed in the sleep loft – and 2 children on sofa beds.

On the ground floor, ‘8 Denari’ is a charming 1-bedroom apartment, while ‘7 Denari’ is a romantic hideaway with a sleep loft, private garden and courtyard dining area – and, of course, those beautiful views.

Just for guests, you’ll enjoy the use of a 13.5 x 5m swimming pool, solarium and hot tub at L’Antico Convento, with natural views as far as the eye can see. The pool is surrounded by sun loungers, so if all you want to do is chill, that’s fine too.

Known as Italy’s ‘Green Heart’, you can’t help but fall in love with Umbria – a part of the country which seems to be untouched by the passage of time. Nearby Umbertide is a fine example, an easy-going town with an eventful history waiting to be discovered. Start with the 14th-century castle and the churches of La Collegiata and Chiesa San Francesco.
