The detail

Ashford Mill is a luxurious, country cottage huddled in the charming, Peak District village of Ashford in the Water. Resting on a tranquil riverbank along a quiet, rural lane, it is a peaceful retreat amongst breath-taking dales. Bask in the eerie beauty of the wild and rugged moorlands, beside the rich, open valleys and the craggy, cliff edges. Throw on your walking boots and get lost amongst the landscapes, stopping off in picture-perfect villages hidden amongst the hillsides.

The 11th century corn mill is set amongst six acres of flourishing water meadows and is a Grade II-listed conversion that’s packed full of character. Its quirky, industrial roots have been beautifully preserved and are fused with the five-star comforts that its heritage deserves. Expect ancient mill workings and rusted machinery, reimagined into eco-friendly turbines and state-of-the-art mod cons. Natural materials give it a rustic, farmhouse finish and include crooked oak, polished flagstones and exposed stonework.

An open-plan kitchen-diner is the heart of the mill and blends original features with designer pieces. There’s the massive mill cogs and the four oven Aga, alongside the vintage Butler’s sink and the modern appliances. Relax on the plush leather sofas or around the handcrafted dining table, throwing open the arched patio doors and sitting out in the quaint, cottage garden.

If that wasn’t enough there’s an impressive 40ft lounge upstairs, complete with sink-in seats, plump cushions and a sleek, glass-panelled stairway. Ageing machinery hangs above the vaulted, beamed ceiling and is joined by a Sonos Sound System and remote-controlled lighting.

Three sumptuous bedrooms can be found down the wood-panelled hallway, dressed with comfy beds, antique furniture and uber-stylish touches. Look out for the contemporary glass floor panel in the master en-suite double, or the iconic millstones in the second en-suite double. The mill’s snug grain bin even has room for three more people, with a full-size set of bunks and a cosy single.

Beyond the comfort of your mill lie the wonders of the Peak District with its chocolate-box villages and unrivalled, country backdrops. Follow the magnificent Monsal Trail or the winding River Wye, discovering the white and dark peaks and the ancient railway lines. Bakewell and Chatsworth are just a short drive down the lane, while Ashford in the Water is just a five minute walk away. Sample mouth-watering cakes and delicious home-cooked dishes as you stop at bijoux inns and traditional, country restaurants.
